Intermediate Sewing: Sewing with Knits & Closures (Intermediate Dress)

This intermediate sewing class is designed for students who are ready to expand their garment-making skills by working with knit fabrics and functional closures. Using the intermediate dress pattern for children (sizes 12m to 14), students will construct a comfortable, wearable knit dress while learning techniques specific to stretch fabrics and professional garment finishing.

Students will apply their existing knowledge of reading and following a commercial sewing pattern while focusing on new skills such as sewing knits with stretch stitches or a serger, managing fabric stretch and recovery, and achieving clean, durable seams. The class will also introduce buttonholes and buttons through an optional scoop-back overlay, giving students hands-on experience with closures commonly used in garment sewing.

Throughout the course, students will construct a lined bodice, set knit sleeves, attach a gathered skirt, and hem a knit garment. By the end of the class, students will have a finished dress and the confidence to tackle knit garments and button closures in future projects.

Skills Learned

  • Sewing with knit fabrics (fabric selection, needles, stretch stitches, and serger use)

  • Constructing a lined knit bodice with a scoop neckline

  • Sewing and setting knit sleeves

  • Hemming knit garments

  • Creating buttonholes and sewing buttons

Prerequisites

Students must already know how to read and follow a commercial sewing pattern and should be comfortable operating a sewing machine independently (threading, straight seams, backstitching).

  • Please arrive on time for each class, as instruction begins promptly and late arrivals may miss important demonstrations. Students are expected to come prepared and ready to work.

You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you prefer. Sewing machines will also be provided for students who do not have one or do not wish to transport theirs.

Students are responsible for providing fabric, thread, and any required materials when requested. Specific supply needs will be communicated in advance or during class, and students should bring the materials specified by the instructor.

Regular attendance, preparedness, and participation are essential to get the most out of the class.
